Giveaway – Seventh Generation!

If you’ve spent any amount of time in the Fraser Valley this summer you will have noticed a few things.  First, the latter portion of the summer has been significantly warmer than it’s beginning (which if you’re Corey is STELLAR!), second the air is thick.  Not just with heat, but with smog.

When you look up, the mountains are hazy, as if there is some bizarre layer between us and them, some days the trees aren’t even visible.  It’s courtesy of the pollution seeping from our cars into our air, and tainting our environment.

It bothers me, and it got me thinking.

There isn’t a lot I can do about the smog-o-sphere, short of reducing how much time we spend driving (which by the way, we have done this summer.  Significantly).  It doesn’t seem like much, but something is better than nothing right?  And if everybody put forth a little something, maybe we’d get a whole lot everything!

It’s not just me breathing this air any more (not that it ever was but come one, let’s for one minute be 16 again…ya that.  It’s called selfish childhood attitude) I have a family now, two beautiful, precious little girls who breath this air, drink the water and count on me to protect them everyday.

And as parents that’s exactly what we do, protect our children.  We’d stand in front of a freight train for them, beat up a bully and worry about them.  We feed them, clothe them and teach them to say “please” and “thank you”.  So then, why aren’t we protecting their environment?  I mean, what good will any of it do if the world they live in as they grow up and grow old is dirty, damaged, poisoned?

I don’t want to think about it, so I won’t.  Instead I’m going to do everything I can to prevent those things from happening.  And one the things I can do is use environmentally friendly products in our home.   We can do our best to make our homes as “green” as possible, and slowly reduce the imprint we’re leaving on the world we’re creating for the children coming up behind us.

Meet Seventh Generation!  A line of eco-concious products, designed to help us fight the pollution battle and make our homes safer, cleaner and greener for our families.

When I did some reading about Seventh Generation and what they believe in, something they said stood out to me,

“Seventh Generation believes their products are healthy solutions for the air, surfaces, fabrics, pets and people within your home – and for the community and environment outside of it.”

They care about the health of our home and our environment, something that matters to me, a lot.  So, I jumped on the incredible opportunity they gave me to try a bunch of their products and share them with you!  (wait till the end, just wait!)

First things first.  I joined the 7th Gen Nation, an online community where I can get information about the Seventh Generation products, get valuable coupons (wee!  saving money!) and tips for living green.  Then I received my fantastic prize pack, which included a 100% organic lunch bag and some coupons to pick-up my own Seventh Generation products FREE to try!  Here’s what I tried, and what I thought…

Free and Clear Baby Wipes – Now we’re out of the diaper stage in life (although these guys do make some rockin’ good diapers I hear) but it seems you can never be past the wipes stage.  Between ice cream spills and picking their noses our girls constantly have hands that need a cleaning and I’m always looking for a wipe.

What I thought – While I didn’t see any major difference in cleaning abilities between these wipes and others I’ve purchased in the past, I did find a different sort of pleasure in using them.  Firstly because they are exceptionally soft, so when I wiped the smears off of Audrey’s face the other day she didn’t flinch.  And second because they are totally free of dyes and fragrances, containing a plant derived cleaning agent and they haven’t been processed with chlorine.  When I read that I caught my breath – the ones I had been using were processed with chlorine?!!

Natural 2X Liquid Laundry 1.47L (33 loads) – Non-toxic, biodegradable laundry detergent, with a formula made with a plant-derived cleaning agent designed to attack the tough stains, made for both HE and regular machines.

What I thought – I was a little sceptical.  I’ve been using a different brand of detergent for years.  Our Bethany has the most sensitive skin and switching detergents has only ever lead to trouble in the past and so I wasn’t all that certain this time would be any different.  Add to that I was worried that it’s all natural formula wouldn’t be able to deal with the smells, stains and daily wear our laundry seems to face.

Boy was I wrong!  I was so unbelievably surprised by this detergent.  Doing my best to prove my theory right, the first load I washed with my detergent was a bunch of wet, smelly towels that had been sitting in my washing machine for 3 days (what?  I’m a busy Mom you know!).  Even my regular detergent struggles with getting rid of that kind of smell, but less than half a cap of Seventh Generation Detergent later and my towels came out smelling clean, not perfumy (I chose the Free and Clear fragrance free stuff), just clean.

The kids’ laundry was no different, a stain that’s 3 washes old lifted out of one of Bethany’s shirts and lo and behold – no rashes!  Again, I’m totally sold.

Automatic Dishwasher Powder – A biodegradable, phosphate free Automatic Dishwasher detergent that works without chlorine, fragrances or dyes.

What I thought – In our pain in the rear dishwasher (I’ll complain about it another day) it worked excellent!  Dishes that don’t always come out clean came out great and I had a peace of mind knowing that everything that had gone through and come out of my machine was safe for my family.

Natural Household Cleaners – Non-toxic, biodegradable cleaners that are safe for the environment and that don’t create harsh fumes.

What I thought – I struggle with bathroom cleaners.  A few on the market cause me to have serious trouble breathing if the windows aren’t open, but I’ve suffered through in an attempt to make my home cleaner.  Safer for my family.

Then along came Seventh Generation determined to change my mind about my cleaning habits and again they proved me wrong.  The cleaner I purchased not only cleaned the surfaces I sprayed it on, but it also left me able to fill both my lungs with clean, inoffensive air.  Excellent!  And sold!

Without a doubt I was impressed by the Seventh Generation products and together as a family we’ve made the decision to switch over.  The quality of these products is superior, they have great coupon opportunities and they aren’t any more expensive than my regular cleaners in the store (score!).

Now it’s your turn!  Go over to the 7th Gen Nation and sign up, get some coupons, learn some useful tips and get cleaning.  Seventh Generation is also giving away a prize pack, just like mine to one lucky reader!

  1. Another good giveaway!

To be environmentally friendly I try to actually make most of my own cleaners and use all reusable items for the lunch kits, from snack bags to the laptop lunch system. It's great.

  2. Awesome giveaway! While not perfect, I have switched to a lot of green cleaning products and it feels so nice to know my house is a tad less toxic than it was five years ago. I use vinegar and water on my windows. Do I get a gold star? 🙂

  3. I have been using environmentally safe stuff in my house for years and I like it that I can breathe while cleaning where as some of the chemical stuff made me gag, and or I just couldn't breathe around it. I also like it that my house is chemical free! I use stuff from both Meleleuca and Norwex…both, great companies! I do use 7th Generation Hand Dish Soap and do like it as well.

  4. I’m not super environmentally friendly, though I wish I was more so. The one thing we do take VERY SERIOUSLY around here is recycling. I hope that does help the earth a bit by reducing what is going in the landfill.
