Pop It

I don’t know about your kids but my kids love popcorn.  Not so much the gross, smelly popcorn at the theatre but rather the home popped kind, drizzled with a teeny bit of real butter and salt.

It’s a treat for them and for all intents and purposes it’s one that I don’t have to worry about too much.  At least if it’s done right.

Up until recently the only time Bethany and Audrey were allowed to have popcorn was when they were at my Mom and Dad’s house.  Firstly because I’m so allergic (and used to love it so much pre allergy) and secondly because they have an air popcorn popper.   The garbage found in microwave popcorn is just as scary if not scarier than the artery clogging popcorn found in the machines of the theatres.

I had resigned myself and them to the fact that they’d probably never eat popcorn at home again…at least until I learned this magic secret to making safe  microwave popcorn!

All you need is corn kernels (read the package to make sure that they haven’t been treated with anything), a brown paper lunch bag, a microwave and butter/other seasonings.

To make it fun, we like to decorate our paper bag…

Take 1/4 cup of corn kernels and pour them into your paper bag.  Believe it or not this will serve 4 people

Fold the top over 3 times, lay the bag folded side up, flat on it’s back in the microwave.  I make sure to shake the kernels out in a single layer as best I can, they pop better that way.

Microwave for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes (depends on the microwave.  Start with the least amount of time because it can burn fast)

Pour out into a bowl, season and enjoy!

It works like magic and you don’t have to be afraid of any of the things in the bag, the preservation or anything else.  Bonus – it’s WAY less expensive than buying microwave popcorn bags!

Go, try it out now and eat a bowl for me!

Oh we love popcorn in my house. We have a popcorn popper so I’ve never tried using a paperbag in the microwave before, I’ll have to do this with the kids soon!

We LOVE popcorn and believe it or not, I have not tried this way of doing it yet! I’ve been meaning to and love that you know exactly what goes in it. I will need to go pick up some paper bags so we can have fun enjoying popcorn like this as well. Thanks for sharing :)

I’m still partial to making it the old fashion way, in a pot on the stove. You just cannot beat popcorn popped in oil (and it doesn’t take much oil).

This does sound like a good alternative to the store bought microwave stuff though! We don’t buy that in our house either.

Oh that is so smart! We have air popper but this is a great solution for when I go back to work as a snack!

Who knew it was so easy! I just bought a microwave popper and it works great but paper bags are cheaper and less likely to leach who knows what into it….
