Have you ever noticed some of the greatest parts of the 80’s and early 90’s never really died? Neon colors are sprouting up everywhere, Friends can be found on re-run just about any time of the day and the Backstreet Boys are back on tour! Those decades may have had their epic fails (stirrup pants anyone?) but they also had their shining glories.
Among the greatest “hits” of the 80’s & 90’s is a group of friends that won my heart as a small girl. The sweet & funny, brightly colored characters of My Little Pony were an integral part of my growing up years. In fact, at my parents house there is still a large plush rainbow pony that I had as a small girl. Bethany and Audrey LOVE her and can be seen quite often dragging the poor thing around by a purse strap looped around her neck as a “leash”.
Hasbro Studio’s My Little Pony series has been around for decades and while they too have seen some changes with the years that have past, the basics have still remained. Good story lines, with deeper messages that leave children captivated and parents feeling satisfied.
The newest DVD in the My Little Pony collection is no different.
My Little Pony: Equestria Girls is the newest full-length feature being released by Hasbro Studios and Shout! Factory Kids in Canada & the United States on August 6 2013. It’s available now for pre-order on both Walmart.ca and Amazon.ca All the details of the DVD can be found on the Official Website, but here’s a brief synopses:
Plot: When Twilight Sparkle’s crown is stolen from the Crystal Empire, she pursues the thief, Sunset Shimmer, into an alternate world where she finds herself turned into…a teenage girl! To regain her crown and return to defeat Sunset Shimmer in a competition to become crowned Princess of the Fall Formal at Canterlot High. Luckily, she will have the assistance of Spike and five teenage girls who remind her of a certain group of ponies back home.
Bethany and Audrey thought it was great! There were a few scenes that left them feeling a little nervous, they don’t like confrontation and the fact that the crown was stolen had Audrey up in arms, “Stealing is wrongness Mama” but over all it was a hit. They enjoyed it so much that the next day when we were out for tea with their Auntie, it was the first thing they told her about. (Related: The movie is great, they’re explanation of it is hilarious and confusing.)
For the most part I also thought the movie was good, although I will say there where moments where I disliked the attitudes of the ponies. We’re very aware of the “sassy talk” our girls hear everywhere and how it affects how they talk to each other and those around them. Overall though, I think the movie does a good job of portraying the consequences of such behaviors & attitudes to the children watching it. It also left a door open to talk to our girls about how they’d handle some of those situations (not so much turning from a human into a pony part…).
The DVD came with some special nail tattoos, and has a collection of bonus features including both French & English versions, karaoke songs, pony-fy yourself, printable movie posters and Through the Mirror of Equestria Girls.
